Court Cards (the Page, Knight, Queen, and King cards) can be some of the most challenging cards to interpret in a reading. They can represent any of the following:
- You: Your qualities or life focus
- Advice
- An event
- Another person
So, how do you know what the card represents? It depends on the question asked. If you are doing a reading about self-reflection, then the qualities of the Court Card drawn would reveal traits to embody or work on. In a reading about your outer reality, the Court Card can indicate an event that may come to pass or a person in your environment.
For example, the Page (called “Explorers” in my deck, the Colorful Tears tarot) is about learning, growth, youth, children, or a child-like naivete. So as an event, this could be about going to school, teaching a class, or sharing a skill. It could also be about having a child or working with children.
As a person, this card would be a curious and creative individual who is open but also not steady. Their reality is in flux.
So, Court Cards are open to interpretation and should be considered within the context of the question asked and the spread used.
But here’s something else that’ll blow your mind. Two Court Cards can be the SAME PERSON.
I was doing a reading the other day, and two Court Cards were drawn to represent one person. I realized that the two personalities revealed a disconnect between their inner and outer worlds. So, I saw them as aspects of the person’s personality that weren’t integrated or changeable depending on their environment.
So, the person might act one way, but internally their world presents a different reality.
For example, if you’re reading on someone else’s energy, the Connector of Tears suggests an advanced emotional realm. In contrast, the youthful energy of the Explorer of Tapes suggests difficulty turning feelings into concrete steps or actions.
Tapes (Pentacles) represent material concerns: Money, home, stability, and work. So, you could also interpret this person as someone very sensitive and in touch with people (the Connector); their relationships are advanced. But the Explorer of Tapes is not settled in the material realm; their practical stuff ain’t quite together.
So, these cards provide a snapshot of one person’s reality and two distinct personas within. On one level, they’re very mature; on another, they’re roaming the earth with no anchor.
I encourage you to grab out your Court Cards and play with them. Choose two cards that represent parts of yourself that you want to integrate. Or, read for a friend and have them choose from the Court Cards only. See how their energies work or don’t work together.
The Court Cards have a lot to say. Don’t freak out when you see a bunch! They are friendly when you get to know them.
