We talk about the Major Arcana cards as the cards of spirit or soul, and the Minor Arcana cards as our day-to-day. But what does it mean to have cards that represent the soul?
The soul is in constant flux, and the Major Arcana cards show us the place our spirit’s been hanging out. I don’t like to call the Major Arcana cards life lessons for the soul because that implies that we don’t already have the answers. And we do. They’re always deep within us, which is what the Major Arcana can help us discover.
The cards are a space for the soul to see itself.
They are the perfect mirror.
But, and this is a big butt… I think they are also events. For example, 2023 was a Tower year for me. And wow– an unforeseen situation threw me from a tall height. As I fell to the ground, not only did my actual life change, but all that was already broken within me needed mending. The Tower event highlighted all of the inner demons that needed to be taken out.
So, Major Arcana cards can be both the event itself, and the soul-work that takes place because of what happened.
We think of the Lovers as representing love and relationships, but the two figures can represent so many things. What makes us feel complete? What fires us up? What choices are we faced with? As we seek love and connection, our inner lover presents itself, forcing us to see what we know about loving ourselves, and how this informs the choices we make.
